What does it look like when God refuses to let our circumstances have the final word? In this exploration of Jacob’s story from Genesis 31, we are taken deep into a journey of divine faithfulness that stretches across decades of hardship, deception, and fear. Jacob, a man whose very name meant ‘heel-grabber’ and ‘deceiver,’ found himself caught between a manipulative father-in-law and a brother whose rage had been building for twenty years. And yet, threading through every twist of that story is the presence of the Angel of the Lord, a figure many theologians identify as the pre-incarnate Christ, who appears not just once but repeatedly, protecting promises made long before Jacob could even understand them. The central spiritual insight here is both simple and staggering: Christ is never absent from the journey He is asking us to take. Whether we are being called toward forgiveness, confession, or a complete reimagining of our future, He does not send us out ahead of Him alone. He walks into the difficult places with us, and the same promise He made to Jacob, ‘I will be with you,’ is the very last promise Jesus speaks to His followers before ascending into heaven in Matthew 28, verse 20.
