Scripture: Psalm 84:1-12

This exploration of Psalm 84 challenges us to examine what truly captivates our hearts. We’re creatures of longing, constantly chasing the next milestone—whether it’s a driver’s license, a career advancement, or retirement. Yet the psalmist invites us into a radically different pursuit: longing for the presence of God above all else. The message draws a striking contrast between the Old Testament worshiper who had to journey to Jerusalem’s courts for reconciliation and our present reality through Christ. Where ancient pilgrims sang ‘Better is one day in your courts than a thousand elsewhere’ while traveling for weeks to offer sacrifices, we now have immediate access to God’s presence through Jesus’ once-for-all sacrifice. The sermon unpacks three profound blessings: finding rest in God’s presence rather than exhausting ourselves trying to earn His favor; discovering strength by setting our hearts like highways toward heaven; and learning to trust God’s promises even when circumstances seem to contradict them. Perhaps most poignantly, we’re reminded that even in the ‘Valley of Tears’—those seasons of deep sorrow and struggle—God doesn’t wait for us on the other side but walks beside us, transforming our tears into springs of blessing. The question becomes: what song is our heart currently singing? Is it a melody of fear, ambition, or endless striving, or have we trained our hearts to genuinely desire God more than anything this world offers?
