You have undoubtably received many emails and correspondences from companies, schools, and businesses that are doing their best to rally together in the fight against the spread of the COVID-19 virus. As our elders have prayed and discussed Exchange’s part in that, we know we need to act as well. The elders have unanimously decided to cancel our central gathering at Rolesville Elementary for this Sunday, March 15th.
Does canceling services mean we are giving in to fear?
After much prayer and discussion, our elders are unified that this isn’t a fear based decision, but one that’s grounded in wisdom and submission to authority. Yesterday, our State’s Governor asked that as much as possible, large gatherings be suspended. Additionally, we know from medical professionals that spikes are created when numerous people are exposed and infected at one time. Mass gatherings are how that happens. The hospitals can not handle a “spike” of COVID-19 cases. There are literally not enough beds or ventilators to handle a rapid rate of infection. If a “spike” were to occur, the hospitals will literally be forced to choose who will receive care and who will not. Therefore we feel the humble, loving, and Biblical thing to do is to be a team player with what our local and state officials are asking us to do. “Love one another with brotherly affection. Outdo one another in showing honor.” (Romans 12:10) “Let every person be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been instituted by God.” (Romans 13:1)
While we are canceling our central gathering, we will be live streaming the service and encourage you to view online. Jesse will lead us in some worship, we will highlight the ministry of Human Coalition and discuss our upcoming One Offering, and Ed will lead us in teaching Genesis 32. We believe that this text will be especially helpful in a time when many are tempted to operate from fear. Please read the text in preparation for Sunday. The service will be streamed at our normal gathering time of 10AM. You can find our feed on Exchange’s Facebook page.
If possible, for those in good health and not medically-compromised, consider a breakfast or brunch with your small group, or gather with folks from your small group to watch the live stream together. (Please don’t expect or assume your small group leader should host. Consider offering your home if that’s something that you would like to do.) Invite a neighbor and watch the livestream with them. While COVID-19 is certainly contagious, so is joy. Let’s make sure that we’re living out of faith and love for one another.
We will continue to update you as things change. Here are important action steps
