Prayer Focus this Week: A Heart of Gentleness

The Christian life is a journey to become more and more like our Lord. In Matthew 11:28–30, Jesus describes his own heart as gentle and lowly, that is, humble. We should seek for the Spirit’s help to create in us this same attitude.

This week, we are asking to be united with Jesus in our spirit. The Apostle Paul encourages us:

Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others. (Philippians 2:3–4)

Let us pray that we will love others—especially those who are different from us and even our enemies—as Jesus did.

Hear this from author and pastor Jon Tyson:

“Given the role of the media today, the polarization of our politics and the presence of a 24 hour income producing news cycle, we are told who is deplorable and who is worthy of respect. We are told who our enemies are and why they present a savage threat to us. Things are not presented to us in a fair, nuanced, or civil way. Hate is being cultivated one social media post at a time (from both sides). Each 15 second soundbyte or meme is training us to release our hate on our enemies.”

Exchange Church: we cannot view our neighbors in this way! We are called to imitate Jesus who suffered hatred and died at the hands of his enemies. When we disagree, we must remember that Christians belong to a different kingdom and exercise a different way of treating others. Let us love one another with gentle hearts like our Savior.

Lord, help me to love others, even my enemies, in the same way that Jesus did. Let me remember that I am in need of God’s grace today. Please show me the log in my own eye, and seek for the good of my neighbor no matter what!
